This subject provides participants with a working knowledge on embedded systems, with emphasis given to design and development of a microcontroller based application that involves hardware and software interfacing. This module explains the functions of the input/output (I/O) ports and the associate registers,  how to configure the I/O ports,  as well as applying various techniques to interface the microcontroller to the external peripheral devices.

Presently, logic gates are available in integrated form, and digital Integrated Circuits (ICs) are the ones most commonly used in complicated circuit design. Logic gates can be designed using different methods. Therefore, there are different types of logic families, but TTL and CMOS are the two main types. A digital circuit designer should select a particular logic family for any application based on the actual requirements and understanding of the performance characteristics of that logic family.

If a digital system is used to interact with real-world information, it must be capable of converting analog signals to digital data. Likewise, after processing the data, it must convert the digital data back to analog signals. These conversions are performed by conversion devices and circuits. There are many types of conversion devices and circuits that have been developed for electronic equipment over the years.
